So I started building my theremin today. It's the first time I've ever done such a thing and it seemed like an impossible task. But after a twenty minute lesson on electronics and soldering I have began my journey! Oh, and a little guidance helped as well. My ever so wonderful Uncle Andy (who is also a fellow member of Push To Transmit as our shoeless bassist) lent a helping hand. We're not finished just yet but I thought I'd share my first experience of building an instrument. Maybe you'll even hear my theremin featured on some future tracks!

This is my workspace. Nothing special really, just a towel and a plastic bag full of alien gadgets and perhaps ray guns and instructions in Greek and a box thing with a speaker thing and a green board with some stuff scribbled on the back. Easy right? Well when I ordered the theremin it said "assemble yourself" and I suppose they really meant it!

Here's a looksie at our little box and silicon board (I found out what the green thing is, yay!). Nothing too complicated yet, just getting to know the parts that will eventually make up my awesomest of instruments. On we go.

So here we are, at the first step of our arduous task. Laying stuff out is important! It's very zen-like you know; when you break down a huge problem into smaller ones they're easier to manage. Like Jack White and acorns! Get it? Well anyways there were a lot of things like conductors and wires and resistors and scary things I don't remember the name of and it all looks terribly intimidating but it's all good when you have a sensible man named Andy explaining what these things all mean.

Here's a shot of my uncle with the soldering iron. He's taking little pieces of metal wire and melting them onto the back of the silicon board to fuse all the wires and parts together. Impressive huh? What's even more impressive is that I did it too! Without burning myself! Well, I did singe my hair a bit and it smelled not so good but it was still a victory.

Another shot of Andres' hand doing some soldering. You can see where the melted metal bits are attaching stuff together. We did this for about two hours before we had to part for the day, but on Sunday before band rehearsal we'll pick up the project once more.

My theremin so far! It's not much but I promise it will get there. All in all I'm very excited and it's been totally worth frying my brain trying to understand these things. There will be an update as this project journey climb up Mount Doom goes on.
